New Road Proposed in Wake of Salsipuedes Highway 1 Road Collapse

After years of constant repair and warnings from geologists that the road would eventually collapse, the Highway 1 Toll Road along the dramatic cliffs of Salsipuedes between Tijuana and Ensenada finally fell on December 28th. Fortunately, no one was injured in the landslide that took out hundreds of yards of heavily traveled route. All vehicular traffic between Ensenada and Tijuana is being detoured through the free road at La Mision. The construction of an alternative route to connect the toll road and the free road has been proposed and could be completed as soon as February, according to federal engineers.

It will be interesting to see what comes of the Salsipuedes coastline, one of the most striking coastal views in the Californias and the target of various development proposals over the past several decades, if the alternative route is realized. Until then, expect additional travel time between Tijuana and Ensenada.
