TIJUANA RIVER ACTION MONTH A SUCCESS!!

This past October 17th, WILDCOAST partnered with the Tijuana River Action Network (TRAN) and celebrated the final event of the 6th annual Tijuana River Action Month (TRAM) for 2015.  Over the past six weeks, WILCOAST and partners have carried out 14 events on both sides of the border that have engaged 3,802 participants in stewardship activities.  These efforts helped prevent over 43,676 pounds of ocean bound trash and 190 waste tires from reaching the Pacific Ocean through the Tijuana River Watershed.

The final event on October 17th included a volunteer driven cleanup in the Border Field State Park, an invasive species removal event Los Sauces in Tijuana, a native plant ceremony at the friendship garden in Playas de Tijuana, and an awesome volunteer appreciation party at the Tijuana River Estuary Visitors Center that included elected official speakers, a raffle and live music.  Notable attendees at the party included San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox and City of San Diego Councilmember David Alvarez, who are some of San Diego’s most vocal advocates for the Tijuana River Valley and have played an important role in conservation and access to open space in the region.

WILDCOAST was thrilled to be a part of TRAM and work with local groups, agencies and stakeholders interested in conserving the Tijuana River Watershed in this annual effort. TRAM 2015 was made possible by the help of amazing sponsors and supporters such as REI, Cal American Water, CalRecycle, Surfrider Foundation, 4Walls, I Love A Clean San Diego, California State Parks, Pronatura, Friends of Friendship Park, Proyecto Fronterizo, SDGE, the County of San Diego and Patagonia.

Though TRAM was a huge success and clearly demonstrated community support for stewardship of the Tijuana River Watershed, much more work is needed. WILDCOAST will be actively reaching out and engaging stakeholders and volunteers over the next few months in a campaign to improve water quality of the Tijuana River and our local beaches- please sign the petition for CLEAN WATER NOW below and be sure to share with your friends and network using the #CLEANWATERNOW!!
